Our Visit to Fort Zachary Taylor
Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park offers a unique combination of history, nature, and beach relaxation. At the heart of the park sits a massive brick fort dating back to the mid-1800s, where visitors can explore historic corridors, learn about Key West's military significance, and view an impressive collection of Civil War-era cannons.
While the fort itself is fascinating, many visitors come for what is arguably one of the best beaches in Key West. The park's shoreline features clear water, shaded picnic areas, and a more relaxed atmosphere than some of the island's busier beach destinations. It's an ideal spot to spend a few hours swimming, snorkeling, or simply enjoying the ocean breeze.
We especially loved that Fort Zachary Taylor offers both history and recreation in one location. After exploring the fort, it's easy to cool off in the water and enjoy a quieter beach experience away from many of the crowds found elsewhere on the island.
