Drive Iceland's South Coast to Vik
Iceland’s South Coast is one of the most dramatic stretches of road in the country. Waterfalls cascade from towering cliffs, glaciers spill down toward the sea, and black sand beaches stretch beneath jagged basalt formations. The drive itself feels cinematic — every turn reveals something bigger, wilder, and more powerful than the last.
The day naturally unfolds from west to east, beginning with the iconic waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss before transitioning into glacier views at Sólheimajökull. As you continue toward Vík, the scenery becomes increasingly rugged, with lava fields, moss-covered hills, and sweeping coastal views guiding the way.
Vík makes the perfect anchor point for the South Coast. The small town is surrounded by some of Iceland’s most famous sights, including Reynisfjara’s black sand beach and the cliffs of Dyrhólaey. After a full day of exploring, returning to town for dinner, sunset views from the hilltop church, and a relaxed evening with local food and craft beer feels like the ideal way to wind down.
Tip: Start early. The South Coast is incredibly popular, and tour buses typically reach the waterfalls mid-morning. Arriving earlier means fewer crowds at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, calmer conditions at Reynisfjara, and better lighting for photos. An early start also gives you flexibility if you decide to add optional stops like the Sólheimasandur plane wreck.
