Our Experience - Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail

The Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail is one of the most accessible and rewarding hikes on Oʻahu, offering incredible coastal views without the challenge of a rugged trail. Located on the island’s southeastern tip, this paved path steadily climbs along the cliffs, providing sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean from start to finish.

Unlike many hikes on Oʻahu, the Makapuʻu trail is fully paved, making it suitable for a wide range of visitors. While the incline can still get your heart rate up, the smooth path and well-maintained route make it feel more like a scenic walk than a strenuous hike. It’s a great option if you’re looking for big views without a difficult climb.

The highlight of the trail is the viewpoint overlooking the Makapuʻu Lighthouse, which sits perched dramatically along the coastline below. Combined with the deep blue water and rugged cliffs, it’s one of the most photogenic spots on the island. During the winter months, this area also becomes a prime location for spotting humpback whales offshore.

One thing to keep in mind is the lack of shade. The trail is fully exposed to the sun, so it’s best to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon if possible. Bringing water and sunscreen is essential, especially on warmer days.

Whether you’re adding it to a scenic drive along Oʻahu’s eastern coastline or visiting as a standalone stop, the Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail delivers incredible views with relatively minimal effort. It’s a simple, beautiful experience that fits easily into almost any Oʻahu itinerary.
