Makauwahi Cave Reserve

Tucked along Kauai’s southern coastline near MahaŹ»ulepu Beach, Makauwahi Cave Reserve is one of the island’s most unique and lesser-known natural attractions. This limestone cave is actually Hawaii’s largest and serves as an important archaeological and ecological site, offering a glimpse into the island’s ancient past. What makes this spot especially memorable is the descent into a lush, almost hidden sinkhole — like stepping into a completely different world.

The short hike to the cave is part of the experience. A scenic coastal trail leads you through rugged terrain before arriving at a small opening in the ground, where you’ll climb down a ladder into the cave itself. Inside, you’ll find a surprisingly green oasis, with native plants, fossils, and restoration efforts that bring Kauai’s prehistoric environment back to life. It’s equal parts adventure, history, and nature all in one stop.

Parking Tip: Parking can be a bit tricky here. The closest access is a small, informal dirt parking area near the Mahaʻulepu Heritage Trail. Spaces are limited and can fill up quickly, especially midday. If that lot is full, you may need to park further away and walk along the trail. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a short but slightly uneven walk to reach the cave entrance.
