Drive Mauna Kea
Driving up Mauna Kea is one of the most surreal experiences on the Big Island, taking you from lush coastal landscapes all the way into what feels like another planet. As you climb in elevation, the scenery transforms dramatically—green pastures give way to barren lava rock fields, and eventually to an almost Mars-like terrain above the cloud line.
The drive itself is an adventure, with long winding roads and constantly changing views that make every stop worth it. One of the most memorable parts is breaking through the cloud layer, where you’ll often find yourself literally driving above the clouds with sweeping views stretching across the island and out into the Pacific.
Important Note: This drive is challenging and should only be attempted by a confident driver. The road to the summit is steep and demanding, and it requires a vehicle with 4WD that can be shifted into low gear to safely control speed on the descent. Because of these conditions, most rental car companies do not allow driving to the summit. In our case, we booked a Jeep through Turo that explicitly permitted access to Mauna Kea, which made the experience possible.
As you continue higher, temperatures drop significantly and the air becomes noticeably thinner. At the summit region, conditions can feel extreme and otherworldly, with crisp air, strong winds, and a stark volcanic landscape that highlights just how massive and powerful Mauna Kea truly is.
