Our Experience - Waiʻānapanapa State Park
Waiʻānapanapa State Park is one of the most iconic stops along the Road to Hana, best known for its striking black sand beach set against Maui’s rugged eastern coastline. Formed from volcanic activity, the dark sand creates a dramatic contrast with the bright blue ocean, making it one of the most visually unique beaches in Hawaii.
Beyond the beach itself, the park offers much more to explore. Lava tubes, sea caves, and coastal trails wind through the landscape, giving you the chance to experience Maui’s volcanic history up close. Whether you’re walking along the cliffs, peeking into caves, or simply taking in the views, there’s no shortage of ways to explore the area.
Because of its popularity, Waiʻānapanapa now requires advance reservations for both entry and parking. While this does require a bit of extra planning, it helps preserve the park and manage crowds, making the experience more enjoyable once you arrive. It’s definitely a stop you’ll want to build into your Road to Hana itinerary ahead of time.
Whether you spend a quick 30 minutes taking photos or a couple of hours exploring the trails and shoreline, Waiʻānapanapa State Park is one of those places that truly lives up to the hype. It’s a must-see destination that captures the raw, natural beauty of Maui in a way few other spots can.
