Our Experience - The Ceremony of Keys
Attending the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London was one of the most unique and memorable experiences of our trip. This centuries-old tradition — the nightly locking of the Tower — has taken place almost every evening for over 700 years. The ceremony is formal, precise, and steeped in history, making it feel like stepping back in time.
I first learned about the ceremony while reading a Jack Ryan novel and immediately knew it was something I had to experience in person. Seeing it unfold within the ancient stone walls of the Tower, under the night sky, made it even more powerful than I imagined. The atmosphere is quiet and respectful, and the ritual itself is short but incredibly meaningful.
Tickets are extremely limited and must be reserved well in advance — they often sell out quickly. Photography and video are strictly prohibited, which actually makes the experience even more special. Without phones or cameras, everyone is fully present, simply watching a tradition that has endured for centuries.
Tip: Plan ahead and book as soon as reservations open. Arrive early, dress appropriately for the weather, and soak in the rare opportunity to witness one of London’s most exclusive and historic ceremonies.
