Our Visit to the Charleston Tea Garden
The Charleston Tea Garden offers one of the most unique experiences in South Carolina and provides visitors with the opportunity to visit the only commercial tea plantation in the United States. Located on beautiful Wadmalaw Island just outside Charleston, the attraction combines education, scenery, and plenty of tea into a surprisingly memorable stop.
One of our favorite aspects of the visit was simply walking around the grounds. The gardens are beautiful, peaceful, and provide a relaxing break from the busier attractions found in downtown Charleston. The setting alone makes the trip worthwhile, especially for visitors looking to experience a quieter side of the Lowcountry.
While visitors can purchase tickets for the trolley tour that travels through the tea fields, we were pleasantly surprised by how much we learned during the free self-guided factory tour. Despite being relatively short, the exhibits and production viewing areas taught us far more about tea cultivation and processing than we ever expected to know.
The highlight for many visitors, however, may be the tea samples. The garden offers unlimited complimentary tastings of numerous varieties of freshly brewed hot and iced teas, making it easy to discover new favorites while learning about the differences between blends and flavors.
