Our Experience - Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park
Fort Moultrie tells the story of nearly two centuries of American coastal defense, making it one of the most unique military sites in the country. Unlike many historic forts that represent a single period in history, Fort Moultrie evolved continuously from the Revolutionary War through World War II.
The site first gained national significance during the Battle of Sullivan's Island in 1776, when American forces successfully defended Charleston against the British Navy. That victory inspired the design of South Carolina's iconic palmetto tree flag that remains in use today.
