Our Experience - Walnut Canyon National Monument
Walnut Canyon National Monument protects one of Arizona's most impressive collections of cliff dwellings, where the Sinagua people built homes directly into the canyon walls nearly 800 years ago. The natural alcoves provided shelter from the elements while offering excellent views of the surrounding landscape.
The monument's Island Trail allows visitors to descend into the canyon and walk alongside many of the preserved dwellings, creating an experience that feels remarkably immersive and personal. Seeing these structures up close offers an incredible appreciation for the ingenuity and resilience of the people who lived here.
Beyond the archaeological significance, Walnut Canyon is simply beautiful. The combination of towering limestone cliffs, pine trees, and desert vegetation creates scenery that feels very different from much of the surrounding region.
