Getting to the Big Island is relatively easy, with two main airports serving the island: Kona International Airport (KOA) on the west side and Hilo International Airport (ITO) on the east. Most visitors flying from the mainland U.S. will arrive through Kona, which offers more direct flights from major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. If your itinerary includes multiple Hawaiian islands, hopping between them is quick and convenient, with frequent flights connecting Honolulu to both Kona and Hilo. Once you arrive, renting a car is essential. The Big Island is massive, and many of its top attractions—from volcanoes to beaches—are spread far apart, making a car the best way to explore everything at your own pace.
